The Story of the Sleeper Member

Hello hello hello! it's that time of week again!

First off, Happy Labor Day everybody!

So before I get to my big story (the title of the email), I will talk (write) about some other things that happened this week.

Saturday was my one month mark! Which is weird because it hasn't felt like a month at all. I'm also somewhere between a quarter and a third done with training (quarter if you don't count the MTC, third if you do) and I get my iPad in a week. Both of which are awesome!

On Friday, both because we didn't have any appointments for most of the afternoon and because Elders Hill and Archibald decided it would be more productive than tracting, I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO RIDE A BIKE!!! Yes, for those of you who didn't know, up until last Friday, I had absolutely no clue how to ride a bike. But I do now, which is good because it is fairly likely that I will be sent to a bike area sometime on my mission and it was better to take time for me to learn now than have to waste time learning when I'm actually in the area. Also Laurel is a lot more Rural than most bike areas (Most bike areas are in DC proper) so we had more space (ie parking lot) to do so. I actually learned fairly quickly, all things considered that it took me eighteen and a half years to learn... But I definitely felt Heavenly Father guiding and helping me to learn. I still have to work on it a bunch but at least I am able to now.

So story time: Elder Hill and I have been teaching this Vietnamese man, named Kaywin, who has been an investigator for quite a while (He does everything the missionaries ask him to do and is awesome at keeping commitments, it is just a bit of a challenge to teach him due to a pretty big language barrier). Whenever any missionaries would invite him to baptism, he would say something along the lines of "I already baptize", which we all thought meant he was baptized as a Catholic or something of the like so we tried explaining the whole "proper authority" thing and we thought that he just didn't understand due to the language barrier. Well Elder Hill and I went to visit him on Saturday and he gave us a small laminated picture book of an LDS baptism... His baptism. It turns out he's been a member of the church since about 2009 when some missionaries (who actually spoke Vietnamese) in Utah found him and converted him. When he moved out here though, he didn't know where the building was so no one had any idea that he was there. It's all good though because we gave him the location of our ward building and him and his children all came to church yesterday. He was able to meet a bunch of the ward and fill out the record request form so Salt Lake knows where he is. All I can say about this whole thing is that the Lord really knows what he's doing, even when we have no clue at all as to what is going on.

I know that this church is true and that this is exactly where the Lord wants me to be. I love this gospel and the message it brings that families truly can be together forever. I love all of you and hope you have a  great week!

Sincerely,
Elder Samuel Williams
