Greetings one and all from the greatest mission in the history of life!
So I'll start off my email with a crazy story from last week that I
totally spaced about telling!
Last Friday, Elder Thorpe and I were out and about contacting
referrals when we round a corner and suddenly see this guy (who I'm
99.9% sure was higher than a kite, you'll see why I think this)
walking his bike down the side walk towards us. Upon seeing us he
walks over to us and says, in the voice of someone stoned out of their
mind, "I'm riding my bike into the forest to worship the goddess!" He
then saw our missionary tags and proclaimed, "You're religion is
wrong! There is only the goddess! She gives us life and breath! I'm
biking to the forest to worship the goddess! Join with me and worship
the goddess!" He continued to ramble on in such a matter throwing in a
comment or two about "Jewish Mysticism" then walked away. Elder Thorpe
and I were so baffled at what the heck just happened that we were both
completely speechless for a good minute or so. When we regained our
composure enough to once again phonate, the only thing either of us
could say was, "What?!" Upon further regaining our composure, we
agreed that man was the single weirdest experience on our missions
(which is saying a lot because he has been out about 20 months and
spent five or so of those months in Anacostia (for those of you who
don't know about good ol' 'Costia, don't worry about it, you're that
much better for NOT knowing about it)).
Now moving into this last week! Monday, Elder Thorpe and I went to DC
to look at the Cherry Blossoms, they were super pretty (pictures
included). While there, we bumped into the DC South missionaries who
had all came across the river to do the same thing. After harassing
them a bit for being in our mission, we got to talk to some of them,
they were pretty cool, I guess (just a tiny bit of mission rivalry
there).
Most of our time this week was, like last week, spent trying to
contact referrals (we have a lot of them and get more each week). We
also spent a lot of time this week trying to repair my bike because
while we can get around fine on foot, things would be so much quicker
if we were to bike (can't remember if I said what was wrong with my
bike, but basically, the brake pads are messed up and aren't nearly as
good as they should be, which is dangerous since Kensington is very
hilly...). That meant a lot of going to and from a bike shop to see if
they had gotten in-stock the part that I ordered, then after a couple
tries, finally getting the part, only to take my brakes apart and find
that despite the fact that we ordered the pads specifically for the
type of brakes that I have, the pads didn't fit! So now we are still
stuck on foot for the time being and getting my bike repaired
continues to be a work-in-progress.
We are still trying to find people to teach. Not much luck as of yet,
but we are hopeful that if we keep trying, we will be led to find
those that the Lord has prepared to hear the message of the Gospel!
On Friday, we went on exchange with the Zone Leaders, Elders Jorgensen
and Rowley. I went with Jorgensen to their area, which is the DC 2nd
Singles Ward, which covers all of DC and Seneca stakes. Most of what
we did was attempting to contact referrals that they had received. In
the evening we went to "game night" at this church building that is
used entirely for YSA activities. Meaning, we got to spend the whole
evening playing games, having snacks and socializing with members,
other missionaries, and investigators alike! Which was awesome!
Conference was Saturday and Sunday, which was AWESOME! I love every
opportunity that I get to hear from our modern Prophet and Apostles!
Some of my personal favorite talks were by Elder Holland, Elder
Duncan, both of President Uchtdorf's talks, President Nelson, and
Elder Christofferson! Overall though, Conference is always an amazing
and uplifting experience!
That's all from me this week! I love you all! Have an amazingly wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Elder Sam Williams
