Howdy howdy howdy!!! (Maybe if I say, "howdy" enough, y'all will think I'm country or something…)
This week was another pretty good week, though fairly uneventful. Most of what we've been doing has been trying to contact referrals/find people to teach.
Probably the biggest highlight of the week was that we finally got my bike fixed! It turns out that there was just some grime/grease/something buildup along the back wheel's disk and that was causing the brakes to not grip properly and emit a wonderful screeching noise comparable to that of a mythical banshee. So we wiped off the grime with some metal cleaner and now my bike works like a dream! As we are now able to get everywhere in about a third of the time, one could say that the work in the Kensington Elders area is hastening!
"How is the guy who never learned how to ride a bike until he got on his mission fairing in Kensington" you ask? Well, the area is basically a series of hills that our apartment (northern-most part of the ward) is the top of that mostly decrease in elevation as you go further south. Therefore, getting anywhere FROM our apartment is pretty easy as we can just coast down the street for the most part. GETTING BACK, however, is a COMPLETELY different story… Needless to say, we try to plan our routes to have as little backtracking as possible… Though I'm definitely enjoying walking/biking everywhere. It provides a nice change in pace from White Plains where we spent two or more hours sitting in a car every day.
On Thursday, we went on splits with our ward mission leader and stopped by one of our referrals by the name of Bennie. Apparently, Bennie had met with missionaries a few years back but had been dropped by them two years ago (apparently he wasn't keeping commitments). However, he went to the visitor's center a month back and asked to meet with missionaries again because he felt like he'd been forgotten. We were finally able to catch him at home and teach him! It was a pretty good lesson (we had to go somewhere so it was more of an introduction/getting to know him then leaving him with a chapter to read in the Book of Mormon) though he's a pretty hard guy to get a read on. He claims to not be very religious/have a belief in God because he has a hard time with the whole "opposition in all things" aspect of life, yet he tells us stories about how he's experienced a lot of miracles and is therefore certain that there is a God. Confused? So are we. Though the Spirit was definitely present during the lesson and it seemed as if his heart was softened by the end of the lesson, hopefully as we continue meeting with him, we'll be able to get a better feel for how to best help him feel of his Heavenly Father's love for him and come unto Christ!
We also got to help out with a lot of moves this week. There were two people that were moving from somewhere in the ward to somewhere else in the ward, so we were able to assist them with that. One of them was a part-member family (the wife and kids are members/investigating the church, but the husband apparently isn't all that interested) and after seeing us and the elder's quorum help him do the job that he would've had to do by himself otherwise, we could see that he was definitely touched by the whole thing, which is awesome! One of my favorite things to do as a missionary is service because it allows us to show those we serve how much their Heavenly Father loves them and can bless their lives!
That's about all from me this week! I love you all! I hope y'all have a fantastic week!
Sincerely,
Elder Sam Williams
