| At the apartment |
| With Elders Summit and Talbot |
I'm dreaming of a white... January...
I'm sure someone was singing that this last weekend as the biggest
thing to note this week was... SNOW! Which while seeing it snow was a
pretty CHILL experience, the AP's decided that, due to Maryland
drivers (and this Arizona driver) having no idea how to drive in a
world of frozen precipitation, there was SNOW way they were going to
let us leave our apartments. Therefore, since Friday, we've been
FROZEN in our residencies, so to speak. Overall, we got about eighteen
inches of snow down here in Waldorf (though in the city and further
north, they got at least two feet so I didn't get quite as snowed upon
as other parts of the mission).
Fast forwarding back in the week though, on Tuesday morning, Elder
Sorensen and I got to go give a blessing to a woman, named Stephanie,
who Elder Patchett and I found in our list of "potential
investigators" last Thursday and when we called her, she mentioned
that she was recovering from being in the hospital due to an asthma
attack and was accepting to the idea of us going over to give her a
priesthood blessing. So we went at the agreed time and gave her the
blessing, afterwards, she told us that she felt a powerful feeling of
peace and love inside her and told us that she wanted us to come back
and share our message of the restored gospel with her. So we set up an
appointment to meet with her on Friday, and would have met with her
had the snow storm not put us on ICE for the weekend... It's all good
though because when we told her that we couldn't make it, she asked us
if we could come by this upcoming Friday instead! I'm excited to be
able to work with Stephanie and see the Spirit bless her in her life!
Wednesday morning, I got to teach Seminary! Sister Hale, the seminary
teacher, had to do some grading/interview stuff so she asked if Elder
Sorensen and I could teach that day, and since I expressed interest in
possibly being a Seminary teacher, Elder Sorensen decided to have me
teach the lesson by myself. I taught Ruth 3-4 about how Boaz married
and redeemed Ruth and Naomi and how like Ruth, we all rely on a
redeemer from Bethlehem! It was a really cool lesson and it went
pretty well too!
We also had a world-wide missionary broadcast from church
headquarters, which was pretty good! I didn't get to see all of it due
to a bunch of complications with the Zone leaders being late and
Internet and other technical difficulties (we still got to watch it
from the beginning because of how the church does it's streaming, but
we had to leave before the end to make it to an appointment). What I
did see of it was very good though! It was very much about defining
our purpose in simpler terms because sometimes as missionaries we can
tend to over complicate what we are really doing out here.
We had another absolutely amazing appointment with Jamie on Wednesday!
She already has truly has seen how the restored gospel has already
blessed her life and will continue to do so as she is baptized,
receives the gift of the Holy Ghost and then progresses towards the
temple! Due to the sudden amplification of the color white in the
weather on Friday, we almost had to cancel our appointment with her
and Kyle (her fiancé), but awesomely enough, the Zone Leaders gave us
permission to teach them over Skype so we were able to teach them on
Friday as well! During that lesson, we found out that shortly after
she began reading the Book of Mormon, Jamie had found out about the
Word of Wisdom and decided to live it right then so she had already
been living it! We only have one more lesson to teach her and then
she'll be good to be baptized on the 31st of January!
Jamie's eight year old daughter, Jaylin (I think that's how her name
is spelled?) has been present for a the last two appointments with
Jamie and has shown some interest in the church so we shall see if she
will end up being baptized soon after her mother! I know that the
gospel has and will continue to bless the lives of both Jamie and
Jaylin as they listen to and live the commandments and words of our
loving Heavenly Father!
We also got about an inch of snow on Wednesday, which started sometime
during the lesson with Jamie and resulted in my first experience
driving in the snow. Overall the experience was SNOW fun at all. So
due to that, I'm grateful that we weren't (and still aren't) allowed
to drive this weekend.
We were allowed to leave our apartment yesterday, but we could only go
anywhere if we were being driven by a member, so we went with Brother
Hogue, a member of the 1st Ward, around Waldorf to help people shovel
out their driveways, which was a really COOL experience!
Elder Sorensen wanted to CHILL OUT with the Bayside/Calvert Elders, so
he FLURRIED over there and has been with them since Friday. Meanwhile,
I stayed behind with Elders Summit and Talbot for the weekend.
We still aren't allowed to drive today (except for between 3 and 6 to
go and grab food and stuff) so we'll see if normal proselyting will
continue tomorrow (hopefully it will because being stuck in an
apartment with nothing to do, as a missionary, is not fun).
The snow is supposed to melt starting tomorrow and should be pretty
much gone by Wednesday evening, which hopefully means that we'll be
allowed to drive tomorrow! I am very excited to get back to work! The
field truly is white here (pun not intended...) and I love the people
I have the privilege of working with!
I love you all! Have a great week!
Sincerely,
